Singapore comeback win over Sri Lanka; finishes 15th

Singapore came from 15-8 down in the 1st quarter to beat Sri Lanka 46-49 and finish 15th in the 15th Place Playoff game in the Netball World Cup 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa.

Both teams exchanged goals till the 8th minute and Singapore lead 5-6 at the time. Sri Lanka then only allowed Singapore just 3-goals while scoring 9-goals of their own to end the 1st quarter 15-8. Sri Lanka had 4 goals from unforced turnovers.

The 2nd quarter went along with Sri Lanka maintaining their 8-goal lead at 21-13 midway into the quarter. Thereafter, two turnovers from Thishala Algama and Semini Alwis saw Singapore go on a 0-3 run and brought the lead down to five at 21-16. Sri Lanka went into half time at 26-20 (11-12).

The 3rd quarter Singapore started off well as a 0-3 run brought the lead down to 28-25 and another similar made it 29-28. It was just a goal difference till the last few seconds where Singapore equalized 36 all (10-16) at the end of the quarter. Sri Lanka’s centre-pass to goal rate in that quarter was 69% while Singapore’s was 86% and they scored 16/19 shots while Sri Lanka had 10/10.

Singapore took a 2-goal lead inside the 1st minute of the 4th quarter and then a 0-3 run made it 37-41 and another took the lead to 40-46. Sri Lanka scored 6 of the last 10 goals but it wasn’t enough as Singapore finished 15th in the World Cup beating Sri Lanka 46-49. Sri Lanka’s centre-pass to goal rate in that quarter was 50% while Singapore’s was 64% and they three goals from unforced turnovers.

Thishala Algama at Goal Shooter scored 43 out of 46 attempts (93.5%) while for Singapore, Amandeep Chahal had 38/43 at 88.4%, and Kai Wei Toh scored 11/14 at 78.6%.
