A try from Chandima Sandaruwan during sudden death extra time ensured that St. Peter’s College retained the Under 18 Sevens Title, after winning a closely contested final 12 points 7, in the two-day tournament worked off at Royal Complex. At the half time break Science led 7 -0 and at the end of normal playing time it was 7 all.
Kavindu Cooray opened up scoring for Science College as he went through two Peterite defenders to score under the sticks and take a surprising lead and Science College kept their lead at half time.
Two try scoring opportunities were missed by Yashoda Mendis as his grounding of the ball on the try line was deemed as a knock forward by the Referee. But Mendis was third time lucky as he went through the Science defence and touched down in the corner as the score stood as 7-5 in favour of Science College but Thenuka Nanayakkara made a peach of a conversion from the touch line to equalize the game as it moved towards sudden death.

St. Peter’s kicked started extra time as Chandima Sandaruwan managed to sneak through the Science defenders and score the match wining try in the first move of extra time and secure the Under 18 7s title.

Small teams strike big at Under 18 7s
St. Peter’s earlier thumped Wesley College 35 points to nil in the first semi-final courtesy of a hat-trick from pocket rocket Ishan Fernando while Thenuka Nanayakkara slotted in all five conversion kicks to keep the title defence on course.
Zahira College ended a successful campaign as they unfortunately lost to Science College 10 points to 5 in a nail-biting game.
Earlier in the cup quarter finals, St. Peter’s College kicked off day 02 with a win over a strong S. Thomas’ College 19 points to 05 as the game was evenly poised at 5 all at the break but two quick tries in the last two minutes were good enough to wrap the win for the Bamba brigade. Wesley outclassed the Trinity lions as they deprived the hill capital side of possession to clinch a spot in the cup semi-finals after a 19 points 07 win.
The surprise package of the tournament Sri Sumangala College faced off the resurgent Science College outfit in the third quarter final but the boys from Mount Lavinia put on a stellar performance as they marched in to the semis with a 31 points to 12 victory. Zahira College were impressive on day 01 and they faced St. Joseph’s College in the fourth quarter-final. This game was a close affair as the Josephians were in the lead until the last play but Zahira College managed to score an important try in last move of the game to become victorious 19 points to 14

Trinity secure the plate
Trinity College began the Plate final on a high note by scoring two tries and sailed towards a 12 points lead but St. Joseph’s hit back just before the half time with a superlative counter attacking try as Trinity lead 12-5 at the break.
Trinity scored first in the second half by playing basic rugby of spreading the ball to wider channels as they increased their lead to 12 points and that was good enough for them to take home the Plate 17 points to 05.
In the Plate semi-finals earlier Trinity College locked horns with S. Thomas’ College as the Thomians struggled to reminisce their day 01 performance as they went down 17 points 05. St. Joseph’s outclassed the inexperienced Sri Sumangala College 43 points to nil.

Isipathana had to settle for the Bowl
Isipathana won a humdinger of a game in the Bowl final where they were put to the test by D.S. Senanayake College and the game was so close that Pathana just had a lead of two points and they secured the Bowl by scoring a try in the final move. Final scores read 19 points to 12.
Isipathana College hammered Lumbini College with 31 unanswered points and the second semi-final was a far tighter affair with D.S. Senanayake College and Kingswood 14 points each at the end of the game as both team went into sudden death. D.S. Senanayake College scored the match winning try and went to the final 19 points 14.
Thurstan College comprehensively defeated Dharmaraja College 45 points to 14 in the Shield final and took home the Shield to end the successful second day after going down to Kingswood and Science College on day 01.
