SLUG Hockey Tournament concludes with Sabaragamuwa and Peradeniya crowned winners

The Sri Lanka University Games (SLUG) hockey tournament was held for the third consecutive day today at the Matara Uyanwaththa Football House. The tournament kicked off on the 2nd of August with the group stage matches played in both the women’s and the men’s categories.

The women’s category was dominated by the Sabaragamuwa Hockey team; they beat the Jayawardenapura University on their road to victory. The Men’s category however took a more absorbing turn of events from day 01; University of Peradeniya finally gained the championship.

The tournament eventually started with the respective universities being grouped across 4 groups.

Women’s

In the womens Category Rajarata, Kelaniya, Sabaragamuwa, Jayawardenapura topped their groups being undefeated in the group stage while Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Jaffna, Colombo qualified through to the quarter-finals being the runners up of their respective groups.

The two semi finals were battled out between the Jayawardenapura and Jaffna teams in one match and Sabaragamuwa and Colombo in the second semi final match. Jayawardenapura and Sabaragamuwa progressed to the finals as the losers played the consolation final.  The finals in the women’s category took place between Sabaragamuwa and Jayawardenapura and Jayawardenapura was beaten by Sabaragamuwa with a score of (2-1). Colombo took the 3rd place defeating Jaffna 4-0.

Men’s

Rajarata, Jaffna, Jayawardenapura, and Moratuwa topped the men’s groups winning all their games in the group while Colombo, Peradeniya, Sabaragamuwa and Ruhuna had to settle as the group runners up and qualify through to the quarters with a win. The knockout stage saw Peradeniya taking on the Jaffna team in the first quarter final which Peradeniya won 2 goals to nil. The remaining three quarter finals were won by Colombo, Ruhuna and Rajarata hockey teams defeating Moratuwa, Jayawardenapura and Sabaragamuwa with scores of 3-2, 5-3 (penalties) and 4-3 respectively.  

The semi finals turned out to be rather interesting with arguably the best 4 teams competing although Colombo eased past Ruhuna with 2 goals to 1. The second semi turned out to be breathtaking as Peradeniya defeated Rajarata with the score of 2-0. The all-important final was set up between the Peradeniya and Colombo hockey teams in which Peradeniya scraped past the Colombo team with scores of 1-0 and became the winners of the Men’s SLUG hockey Championship while Rajarata defeated Ruhuna to clinch the 3rd place.
