The Rajarata University Grounds in Mihintale were transformed into a cauldron of excitement last weekend as the finals of the All-Island Schools Under-20 Hockey Tournament concluded amid high drama and exhilarating action. In a tournament defined by close encounters and gritty performances, Royal College, Colombo, etched their name into the history books by securing the school’s maiden elite Schools Hockey title.

The grand final was a fitting climax to the competition, going down to the wire before the Royalists edged out the defending champions, St. Thomas’ College, Matale, in a sudden-death penalty shootout. The match had ended level at full time, setting the stage for a dramatic conclusion that will be remembered for years to come.

Royal College’s journey to the title was built on a foundation of resilience and unyielding team spirit. They began their ground-breaking campaign with a morale-boosting 2-0 victory over traditional powerhouse Christ Church College, Matale. Their resolve was tested severely during the group stage when they faced arch-rivals S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia. The gritty Royalists played out of their skin to edge out the Thomians by the slenderest of margins (1-0). They kept their winning momentum alive against the hill-country giants, Kingswood College, Kandy, securing a comfortable victory. In their final pool game, Royal faced a tough outing against Maris Stella College, Negombo. Despite pressure from the Negombo outfit, the Royalists fought back to secure a 2-1 victory, signalling their intent to take home the silverware.

The knockout stages saw Royal College display clear attacking intent backed by rock-solid defence. In the quarter-finals, they ended the run of the hockey kings from Uva Province, Dharmadutha College, Badulla, with a 2-0 victory. The semi-final posed a fierce challenge from St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa. The “Seaside Warriors” put up a valiant fight, but the determined Royal outfit held their nerve to edge out the Vazians 1-0, securing a place in the grand final while maintaining their unbeaten record.

On the other side of the draw, St. Thomas’ College, Matale, showcased their championship pedigree to advance to the final. They began their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Colombo hockey powerhouse Isipathana College. However, the defending champions faced an early hurdle, settling for a goalless draw against a spirited St. Benedict’s College outfit.

On the second day, the Matale Thomians faced another stern challenge from St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa, managing to scrape through with a 2-1 victory. They received an unexpected test from St. Aloysius College in their final pool fixture but ultimately settled for another goalless draw to secure top spot in the group.

The knockout stages brought out the best in the Thomians. In the quarter-finals, they faced last year’s runners-up, Vidyartha College. Despite the Tigers enduring a shaky group-stage campaign, the Matale Thomians produced a stunning performance, recording a morale-boosting 5-0 victory. In the semi-finals, they overcame the highly technical Trinity College, Kandy, with a clinical 3-1 win to set up a rematch against Royal College.

The defending champions, St. Thomas’ College, Matale, started strongly, raising hopes of a successful title defence with an early goal. They subsequently adopted a defensive approach, aiming to protect their slender lead until the final whistle. However, the spirited Royalists refused to yield. Displaying immense character, they found a crucial equaliser in the fourth quarter to earn a lifeline and send the match into a penalty shootout.

The shootout proved to be a nerve-wracking affair, with nothing separating the two sides after regulation penalties as the scores remained locked at 4-4. In the sudden-death phase, it was Royal College’s composure that prevailed. Goalkeeper Stefan Anthonypillai produced a match-winning save, while Rumal Jayasinghe held his nerve to convert the decisive stroke, handing Royal the coveted title they had pursued for more than a decade.

In the third-place playoff, St. Joseph Vaz College edged out Trinity College to secure third place overall. Royal College goalkeeper Stefan Anthonypillai, who was outstanding throughout the tournament and produced the decisive save in the final, was adjudged the Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament.

Following a superb campaign, Suneth Basnayake of St. Thomas’ College, Matale, was deservedly adjudged the Player of the Tournament for his consistently outstanding performances.

The Royalists put the cherry on top of their historic maiden title triumph by also winning the Most Disciplined Team award (Ranjeewa Kulathunga Memorial Trophy), demonstrating exemplary sportsmanship both on and off the field.
