South Africa built their lead to 281 after Sri Lanka recorded their lowest-ever score in Tests on the second day of the first Test at Kingsmead, Durban.

South Africa resumed their first innings on 80 for 4 after the final two sessions were washed out yesterday. Lahiru Kumara provided the first breakthrough of the day by trapping Kyle Verreynne leg-before. Wiaan Mulder was the next man in but had to walk back after being struck on his right fingers by Kumara.

The introduction of spin worked well for the visitors, with Prabath Jayasuriya striking twice in two overs. He trapped Marco Jansen in front first, followed by Gerald Coetzee, who was well caught by Kamindu Mendis diving forward from deep mid-wicket.

Keshav Maharaj counter-attacked immediately against Jayasuriya, hitting three fours and a six. He scored 24 in a 26-run partnership with Temba Bavuma before falling to Vishwa Fernando. After reaching his fifty, Bavuma continued to frustrate Sri Lanka with another useful stand alongside Kagiso Rabada.

Eventually, Asitha Fernando dismissed the South African skipper after a well-made 70 off 117 balls, including seven fours and a six. Mulder returned to the crease, while Rabada added 15 runs before holing out to deep backward square leg, as the hosts were bowled out for 191.

Asitha Fernando was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 44, while Kumara also claimed three wickets despite being a bit expensive. Vishwa Fernando and Jayasuriya chipped in with two wickets apiece.

In response, Sri Lanka had no answers to the Proteas’ pacers, who made full use of the new ball to reduce the tourists to 16 for 4. Marco Jansen was the chief destroyer, claiming three of those wickets.

Kamindu Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva tried to steady the innings but couldn’t prevent the collapse. Eventually, Sri Lanka were bowled out for a mere 42 in 13.5 overs. Kamindu was the top scorer with 13, while Lahiru Kumara remained unbeaten on 10.

Jansen was the standout performer, registering his best-ever Test figures of 7 for 13 in 6.5 overs. Gerald Coetzee chipped in with two wickets. With this effort, South Africa secured a significant first-innings lead of 149 runs.

In the second innings, Tony de Zorzi and Aiden Markram added 47 runs for the opening wicket. Prabath Jayasuriya made history by becoming Sri Lanka’s fastest, and the second-fastest in Test history, to reach 100 wickets, with the dismissal of de Zorzi, who was well caught by Asitha Fernando at deep square leg.

Wiaan Mulder was promoted up the order but managed only 15 before falling LBW to Jayasuriya, his second victim. Just before that wicket, Sri Lanka had a chance to dismiss Markram in the same over, but skipper Dhananjaya de Silva put down a catch at slip when the opener was on 35.

Markram, however, couldn’t fully capitalize on the reprieve, as he was bowled by a beauty from Vishwa Fernando, falling just three runs short of his fifty. South Africa were reduced to 89 for 3.

At stumps, Bavuma and Stubbs steadied the innings, putting together an unbeaten 43-run partnership, taking South Africa to 132 for 3 and pushing Sri Lanka further back in the Test match.
