India humiliate Sri Lanka to complete another whitewash

Sri Lanka Tour of India 2023

SLvsIND 3rd ODI

India completed another clean sweep in a bilateral ODI series against Sri Lanka as they beat the visitors by a mammoth record-breaking margin of 318 runs.

The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma who won the toss elected to bat first and it became a really good decision for the hosts as the batters made use of some ordinary bowling by the Lankan bowlers. With the new ball, Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara started decently but as soon as the assistance faded away, Indian batters thoroughly enjoyed batting on this surface.

Sharma and Shubhman Gill although started slowly, quickly changed gears to make 95 runs for the first wicket before Rohit Sharma departed for 42. After that, Virat Kohli who is back in perfect form got together with Gill and constructed a 131-run stand for the 2nd wicket. Gill, who scored his 2nd ODI century made 116 off 97 balls before getting castled by Rajitha.

After Kohli continued in his merry way smashing the Lankan bowlers to all parts of the ground as he wished to bring up a stunning century which was followed up by reaching a phenomenal 150 which also became the fastest-ever 150 by an Indian. Kohli ended the innings unbeaten on 166 after facing just 110 deliveries which included 13 fours and 8 sixes.

Shreyas Iyer also contributed with a quickfire cameo of 38 as India bundled up 390 runs after losing just 5 wickets in their 50 overs. For Sri Lanka, none of the bowlers had a good day but Rajitha and Kumara ended up taking 2 wickets after conceding over 80 runs in their allotted 10 overs.

You might think the 1st innings was a nightmare for the Sri Lankans but the real nightmare started while chasing under lights as they got completely blown away by some quality swing bowling.  The Lankan batters just departed one after the other as when the last recognised batter Dunith Wellalage departed as the 8th wicket the score was still at 51.  Rajitha and Kumara scored 22 runs for the final wicket before Kuldeep Yadav took Kumara’s wicket to end Sri Lanka’s horrendous show with the bat in hand.

Siraj was the best bowler on show today taking 4 wickets for 32 runs in his 10 overs and it’s fair to say he missed out on a well-deserved 5 wicket haul.  Mohommad Shami supported him brilliantly taking 2 for 20 while chinaman Yadav also took 2 for 16.

This loss of 318 runs will also go down in the record books as the biggest-ever win for a team while defending a total. The batting effort of the 10 Lankan batters was so awful that they fell short of even Kohli’s knock of 166 by 93 runs which clearly shows how bad of a game the visitors had.

Virat Kohli was adjudged player of the match for his glorious unbeaten knock of 166 and also won the player of the series award for amassing 283 runs with 2 centuries. India’s next assignment will be against New Zealand at home while Sri Lanka will also face New Zealand next which will be an away series.
