Sri Lanka Cricket announced a 16-man squad that will take on Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in a tri-series that is set to begin on the 15th of January in Dhaka.

Angelo Mathews will resume duties as captain after stepping down from the post less than 6 months ago after the historic ODI series defeat to Zimbabwe in 2017. A vice-captain for the tour has not yet been named.
Surprise inclusions to the squad include Test Captain Dinesh Chandimal, leg spinning all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga and speedster Shehan Madushanka, who has been picked to the national squad for the 1st time.

Madushanka is relatively inexperienced in the club level as well, having played just 3 list A and 3 First-class games thus far, however his speed has caught the eye of the selectors. Hasaranga, on the other hand, was not in the preliminary squad of 23 named a couple of weeks ago but with Jeffery Vandersay reportedly injured, the selectors have opted for the leg-spinner to partner up with Lakshan Sandakan and Akila Dananjaya in the spin department.
Suranga Lakmal and Nuwan Pradeep will lead the pace bowling department while the team now has a fully fit batting line-up to work with; young Kusal Mendis has also been included in the squad.

Thisara Perera, who captained the team during the tour of India late last year, has also been retained in the squad despite a poor show during the tour where Sri Lanka lost the ODI series 2-1 and T20I series 3-0.
Lahiru Thirimanne, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Sachith Pathirana and Chathuranga De Silva, who featured in the ODI series against India, have been left out for new coach Chandika Hathurusinghe’s 1st series in charge of the national team.
