Sri Lanka announce 17-member squad for Zimbabwe ODIs

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced their squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe which starts on the 16th of January in Pallekelle.

From the initial 18-member squad selected, three players – top order batter Avishka Fernando, uncapped duo -Kamil Mishara and Janith Liyanage were withdrawn having tested positive for Covid-19. Also, two seamers uncapped left-armer Kalana Perera and speedster Lahiru Kumara were dropped having failed their fitness tests last week. Vice-Captain Dhananjaya De Silva has been granted paternity leave.

The selectors included three batters – Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal and Kamindu Mendis to the lineup, while Nuwan Pradeep and Shiran Fernando were added to boost the fast-bowling stocks in the side.

Skipper Dasun Shanaka and speedster Dushmantha Chameera, both having contracted Covid-19 last month have successfully recovered to play against Zimbabwe. In the last ODI series played between these two teams in Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe defeated the hosts, 3-2 in 2017.

The other notable absentees from the squad are Wanindu Hasaranga and Kusal Perera due to injuries.

The three-match ODI series will be a part of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League.
