Reporting from Batticaloa
The two consolation finals of the 52nd Senior Nationals – Level II tournament tipped off at the Miani Technical College Basketball Court Premises today (26th January). Anuradhapura District BC won the men’s category match while Batticaloa District BC grabbed the women’s third place.
Kandy District BC (KDBC) took on Anuradhapura District BC (ADBC) in the men’s consolation finals. ADBC lads possessed a better height advantage in comparison to the KDBC team. It was a disappointing start for the Kandy lads as they only managed to score 05 points in the opening quarter. In reply, A’pura lads added 18 points.
It was in the second quarter that KDBC stepped into the game scoring 22 points. It was a delayed come-back from KDBC as the A`pura lads also topped up with 17 points. KDBC desperately needed to halt the leakage of points from their end, but the lack of a proper structural defense barred it.
Stepping into the third quarter, ADBC added another 18 points and increased the lead as the game progressed. KDBC played a far better game in comparison to their previous matches and yet, they lacked set-plays to work off offensive possessions.
The North Central Province dominance continued as they scored another dozen in the final quarter to seal off the third-place win with the final scores reading, 65-59.
The women’s third-place match was played between Batticaloa District BC vs. Polonnaruwa District BC. It was a one-sided affair as Batticaloa District claimed a 33-point victory to grab the third place. Full-time scores read 15-48.
