Batting collapse puts SL Emerging behind SA Emerging on day 2

SL-E team tour of South Africa 2019 | 1st Unofficial Test

1986

Following a great start to the game on day-one of the first unofficial Test against Sri Lanka Emerging, South Africa Emerging were bowled out for 382 runs on day 2.

The flying start South Africa Emerging team got from their top order was probably not utilized to its maximum as the rest of the batting order crumbled within the next 100 runs. Starting the day at 281 for 3, the hosts lost their fourth wicket in just the second over of the day. Paceman Asitha Fernando struck for Sri Lanka, sending the South African skipper Rynard van Tonder back to the hut. Van Tonder scored a composed 69 runs in 117 deliveries.

The rest of the South African innings saw a steep dive as the batsmen failed to put up partnerships. The highest partnership from this point onwards was just the 30 runs between Sibonelo Makhanya and Sinethemba Qeshile.

Tough day at work for SL Emerging in South Africa

The first unofficial Test of Sri Lanka Emerging team’s tour of South Africa got underway….

Apart from the top 3, the highest score was the 28 runs made by Dayyaan Galiem coming in at no.7. Yet again Lasith Embuldeniya proved his excellence by topping the bowling chart with 3 scalps to his name. The two speedsters, Asitha Fernando and Mohammad Shiraz, came back into the game strongly. Both picked a wicket apiece and gave Sri Lanka an opportunity to bid for the game again. Off-spinner, Nishan Peiris too accounted for two of South Africa’s wickets.

Unfortunately, coming out to bat, the Lankans looked completely out of place, as they lost 9 wickets in the span of 230 runs within half a day’s play.

South Africa opened the bowling with the left-arm spin of Kyle Simmonds who delivered with his very first ball as Minod Banuka edged one down the leg side into the hands of van Tonder at leg-slip.

Man in-form, Pathum Nissanka was also dismissed early as he was trapped in front of his stumps by Tladi Bokako. Coming in at 2 for 7, skipper Charith Asalanka joined Hasitha Boyagoda to put on an 82-run stand for the 3rd wicket. That partnership put Sri Lanka back in the game briefly.

Young Hasitha Boyagoda fell prey to Simmonds as his second capture of the game. He was out LBW for 40 valuable runs.

From then on, Sri Lanka lost wickets at regular intervals and eventually ended the day in a dire situation.

Skipper Charith Asalanka was the only man to go past the fifty-run mark, as he scored 56 runs off 84 deliveries with 6 fours and 2 sixes.

Nishan Peiris put in a valuable hand coming late down the order. He remained on an unbeaten 46 by the close of play.

Sri Lanka Emerging are 152 runs behind their South African counterparts with 1 wicket in hand. The game will resume today, 20th July, for day-three.
