Bhanuka heroics in vain as batsmen fail again

Sri Lanka A Tour of India 2019

3rd day of the 2nd 4-day unofficial Test match between Sri Lanka A vs India A ended today as the hosts look to wrap up the series 2-0 unless there is a spirited fight back from the  Sri Lanka lower order tomorrow at the KSCA Stadium, Hubli.

Visitors are chasing a mammoth 430 target in the 4th innings and were 210 for 7 wickets at the stumps of day 03 with Kamindu Mendis (33*) and Lakshan Sandakan (1*) in the middle.

India A won the toss and elected to bat first at Hubli and were all-out for 269 thanks to a brilliant bowling effort from pacer Lahiru Kumara and chinaman Lakshan Sandakan. Sri Lanka A could only muster 212 in reply, anchored by Kamindu Mendis’s half century.

At the conclusion of day 2, home team were in a bit of trouble after being at 216-6, with Shivam Dube and Rahul Chahar seeing off the last few overs of the evening. Dube couldn’t make the most of it this morning as Sandakan got through his defences when he was on 19.

Then, the experienced Jayath Yadav joined Rajul Chahar to construct a worrying partnership for Sri Lanka as the visitors hope of leveling the series became thin. Pair added a valuable 123 partnership, cantering India A total to 372 with the scores of 53 and 84 respectively.

Sandakan again made valuable contribution as he picked up 3 wickets while young left armer Vishwa Fernando ended up with figures of 68/3.

Sri Lanka openers Sadeera Samarawickrama and Pathum Nissanka failed again in the 4th innings, falling cheaply without making any impact for scores of 4 and 5 respectively. Skipper Ashan Priyanjan too departed for 5, trapped by Shivam Dube on pads, leaving Sri Lanka A in a mess at 56 for 3 chasing a target of 430.

Wicket keeper batsman Niroshan Dickwella and Bhanuka Rajapaksha tried to revive the innings, but Dickwella (19) and new-comer Priyamal Perera’s (11) dismissals turned things bad to worse, both getting LBW to Rahul Chahar, dampening Sri Lanka A spirits even more.

Isolated at the other ends, Bhanuka Rajapaksha launched an innings to remember, counter attacking India A bowlers without letting them settle. He made a magnificent 110 off 112 balls with 17 boundaries and 3 huge sixes.

Unfortunately, he was bowled by Rahul Chahar when the total was 175, hinting a 3rd day finish to the test, but Kamindu Mendis again stood guard with his bat to see the stumps of day 03.

He racked up 33 while he was on strike, guiding Sri Lanka to 210. Sri Lanka are still 220 runs behind the target with only 3 wickets in hand going into the final day of the match.
