A long admired player in the first-class scene, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, hit his 8th first-class ton in style against NCC. The southpaw played a flamboyant 115 in just 82 balls to give his team, Burgher Recreational Club, a head start on day one. As the Skipper, Bhanuka walked in with BRC in trouble at 10 for 2. However, the 28-year old pulled out his guns with a relentless approach striking at 140.24 with 12 fours and 6 sixers.

Even though the rest of the BRC batsmen could not be much of a support to Bhanuka, BRC ended at 316 by stumps. Duvindu Tillakaratne contributed with a sedate 53 to steer the team to safe grounds.

Debutant Ashian Daniel got a promising start to his first-class career with 4 wickets for 98 runs, including the prize scalp of Bhanuka Rajapaksa. The off-spinner was a mainstay in the immediate out-going SL U19 team.

It was lone fights for Minod Bhanuka and Milinda Siriwardena in the game between CCC and Saracens SC. The low-scorer saw 16 wickets on day one as CCC succumbed for 142 and Saracens were at 148 for 7 at stumps.

Minod Bhanuka was the life-saver for CCC as the left-handed opener played an outlandish 92 runs on a track where big names like Kusal Mendis, Ashan Priyanjan, Wanidu Hasaranga and Lahiru Madushanka failed to make any impact.

Kasun Rajitha bowled magnificently to pick up a fifer for 63 runs for Saracens SC. Lahiru Gamage was the star with the ball for CCC as the seamer recorded 4 for 24.

In the game between Chilaw Marians CC and Sri Lanka Army SC, Shehan Jayasuriya played a captain’s knock of 95 runs to give the Marians bowlers a bit of a cushion. Chilaw Marians CC was restricted for 269 runs by the soldiers in a show where youngster Dushan Vimukthi and veteran Asela Gunaratne both picked up 3 wickets each.

In reply, SL Army SC was in a spot of bother at 5 for 2 at stumps.

Following a thumping defeat from CCC, Ragama CC were struggling to hold firm grounds with their top-guns failing to stand up. Thanks to Saminda Fernando’s 73 runs and young Nishan Madushka’s gritty 57, Ragama CC managed to put 258 runs against Colts CC.

In reply, the Colts lost both their openers – the young national caps, Avishka Fernando and Sadeera Samarawickrama – early. Yet again, following their 245-run partnership in the previous game, Angelo Mathews and Sanuthush Gunathilaka are steadily occupying the crease with Colts CC on 76 for at stumps.
