The SLC Major League Tier B Tournament for the 2019/2020 season has been scrapped by Sri Lanka Cricket, ThePapare.com learns.

The 12-team tournament, carrying First-Class status, which is played among Tier-B clubs was postponed indefinitely due to COVID019 pandemic in March 2020. The tournament was halted with only 7 rounds of matches played by teams, but with the time constraints, SLC has decided to scrap this season’s tournament with another 4 rounds of matches still to be played.

Sri Lanka Cricket’s calendar for 2020/2021 domestic season announced

This tournament was vital to decide which clubs would be promoted to the Tier A tournament in the next season.  Originally, there was a plan to organize a Promotion/Relegation round with 4 teams (bottom 3 Tier A teams and Tier B champion). The winner of the Promotion/Relegation round was to qualify to Tier A while the rest demoted to Tier B, making it 12-team Tier A Tournament and 14-team Tier B Tournament in 2020/2021. However, due to the current situation, SLC has opted not to go ahead with promotion and relegation, sticking to the current tournament structure.

The next SLC Major League Tier A tournament for 2020/2021 season will commence next January in parallel to Tier A Tournament.
