Sebastians thrash Cambrians in 33rd limited over encounter

St. Sebastian’s College managed to defeat Prince of Wales College by 6 wickets for the 4th consecutive time in their 33rd Limited Overs Cricket Encounter which was worked off today at De Soyza Cricket Stadium in Moratuwa.

Cambrian skipper Savindu Peiris won the toss and opted to bat first. Dashing left hander Vishwa Chathuranga and right handed Sandun Fernando opened the batting for Prince of Wales College. They could not get a good start to their innings as both the openers were dismissed within first 6 overs for 23 runs.

Left handed batsman Suwath Mendis and right handed batsman Prince Fernando joined together and built a 50 run partnership for the third wicket as former was run out when the score was at 73. Prince Fernando, who was batting well for the Cambrians, also got run out after scoring 40 runs which put them in deep trouble at 83 for 4.

Cambrians continued to lose wickets without any big partnerships and their running between the wickets was very poor as there were three run outs recorded during the innings. Right handed batsman Sanoj Darshika showed some resistance with the bat scoring 38 runs with the tail-enders helped Cambrians to post 163 runs for 9 wickets in the allotted 50 overs.

In the bowling department, Sri Lanka U-19 national team capped left arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama and off spinner Praveen Cooray picked up 2 wickets each for Sebastianites.

Chasing 164 runs to win, St Sebastians got off to a great start as they reached 57 runs in first 10 overs losing only 1 wicket. However, they lost three quick wickets for 47 runs putting them under pressure at 104 for 4. Yet, an unbeaten 62 run partnership between skipper Tharusha Fernando (52) and right handed batsman Janishka Perera (34) helped them reach the target with four overs remaining.
