Isipathana College staged a sensational all round performance to upset last year’s under 19 all island limited overs champions, St. Peter’s College in their Under 19 all island limited overs tournament Pre-Quarter final encounter played at Bloomfield grounds.

Isipathana blow knockout punch to St. Peter’s 

Isipathana won the toss and elected to bat first.  Pathanians posted a formidable 225 runs all out in 49.2 overs. The opening pair of Sachin Jayasuriya and Torry Thabrew built the foundation for the win as they put up 107 runs in 154 balls for the first wicket. Sachin Jayasuriya scored 43 runs in 86 balls while Torry Thabrew top scored with 73 runs inclusive of 11 delightful boundaries. Sanjula Abeywickarama produced the finishing touches with a quick-fire 24 runs in 13 balls to propel the Isipathana score beyond 200. Sahan Nanayakkara took 4 wickets to be the successful bowler out of the Peterite bowling attack.

Chasing 226, St. Peter’s faulted in their run chase as they were bundled out for 176 runs inside 50 overs. Right handed deputy skipper Janith Liyanage was the top runs scorer for the Bambalapitiya lades with 39 valuable runs while Sanjula Madushan and Sahan Nanayakkara chipped in with 34 and 28 respectively. Torry Thabrew continued his magical day with another match winning bowling spell taking 3 wickets for 29 runs. 

With this win, Isipathana College will take on arch rivals, Thurstan College in the 1st Quarter-Final scheduled to be played on 26th Wednesday.

St. Peter’s – 176 all out in 42.2 overs : Janith Liyanage 39, Sanjula Madushan 34, Sahan Nanayakkara 28, Manelka De Silva 24, Torry Thabrew 3/29, Kelum Bastianz 2/42, Dushan Nirmana 2/21.

 

Thurstan pip Mahanama at the post in a low scoring thriller

Captain Kavindu Kulasekara played a gem of an innings as Thurstan College defeated Mahanama College by 3 wickets in their Under 19 all island limited overs tournament Pre-Quarter final encounter played at Thurstan grounds.

Mahanama batting first got off to a decent start of 68 runs for the first wicket. Opening batsman D Dhananjaya top scored with 34 runs while his opening partner Sahan Peiris made 29 runs. After the first wicket, Mahanama lost momentum as they lost all their remaining wickets to only 54 runs with Ayesh Weeraratne bein the pick of the bowlers taking 4 wickets while left arm orthodox spinner Senal Wijesinghe scalping 3 wickets. Thurstan spinners tangled the Mahanama batting lineup as they battled over 41 overs to reach their below par score of 122.

Chasing a modest target of 123, Thurstan College got to the target in the 45th over with their skipper Kavindu Kulasekara anchoring the chase with an unbeaten 58 runs in 100 balls. Vice-Captain Minhaj Jaleel made the initial runs making with 22 runs opening the batting but the rest of the Thurstan batters faulted to the extra pace of Mahanama captain Nayana Prabhath who took 3 wickets for the visiting team. After being in a peculiar position of 97/7, gutsy Kavindu guided his team to the quarter finals.

Thurstan College will be taking on their traditional rivals, Isipathana College in the 1st quarter finals of the Under 19 all island limited overs tournament for the 2013/14 season.
