Schools Limited Overs Cricket – Thurstan and Ananda advance to the Quarter-Finals

The pre-quarter final stage of the under 19 all island schools limited overs tournament 2015 commenced on 24th March in Colombo and defending champions, Thurstan College and Ananda College booked the first places in the quarter-finals when they beat Sri Sumangala Vidyalaya, Panadura and Isipathana College respectively. 

 

Thurstan College vs Sri Sumangala Vidyalaya

All-round brilliant Thurstan College comprehensively defeated the lads from Panadura by 137 runs at Thurstan Grounds. 

Kasun Abeyrathne’s superb knock of 82 paved the way for Thurstan to post a commanding 234 runs on the board batting first. Salinda Samaranayake chipped in with 45. Kaumal Nanayakkara and Sewinda Thulakshana captured 3 wickets apiece for the visitors. Chasing 235 runs to win, Sumangala boys faltered in their chase as they were bowled out for a mere 97 runs. Isitha Wijesundara was the pick of the bowlers taking 3 wickets while Naveen Gunawardene and Tharindu Roshan captured 2 wickets apiece. 

Thurstan will now meet the winners of the pre-quarter final match between Richmond College and Mahanama College in the quarter-final.

Thurstan – 234/8 in 50 overs: Kasun Abeyratne 82, Salinda Samaranayake 45, Charana Nanayakkara 21, Thimira Jayasinghe 19; Kaumal Nanayakkara 3/37, Sewinda Thulakshana 3/59.

Sri Sumangala – 97 all out in 32.3 overs: Kushan Akalanka 20, Harith Lakshan 19; Isitha Wijesundara 3/24, Naveen Gunawardena 2/20, Tharindu Roshan 2/00. 

 

 

Ananda College vs Isipathana College

Ananda had to fight hard in order to beat Isipathana by 3 wickets at the Colts grounds. 

The home team batting first made only 146 runs. Left-handed batsman, Pramod Maduwantha top-scored with 35 for Isipathana while his skipper, Chameera Dissanayake stroked 31 runs. Ananda skipper Sammu Ashan took a 4-wicket haul with his off-spinners while Asel Sigera and Sahan Arachchige shared 5 wickets amongst them. Chasing 147 runs to win, Ananda reached the target in the 45th over with Isipathana making life difficult of the visitors. Sahan Arachchige’s valiant unbeaten 36 ensured the win for Ananda. Left-arm spin twins of Chameera Dissanayake and Yomesh Ranasinghe bagged 2 wickets apiece. 

Ananda will now meet the winners of the pre-quarter final match between Lumbini and St. Benedict’s in the quarter-final.
