School Cricket summary – Isipathana and Thurstan continue their purple patch

The under 19 division one cricket tournament 2014/15 is in full flow with all the teams fighting hard to secure top berths in the points table headed by Trinity College, Kandy. 

Many matches took place as another busy school cricket weekend commenced. Arch-rivals Isipathana and Thurstan continued their match-winning form registering an outright win and a first-innings win respectively while Trinity College and S. Thomas’ College took major honours on day 1 in their traditional fixtures against St. Joseph’s College and Wesley College correspondingly. 

 

Isipathana College vs St. Aloysius College 

Chameera Dissanayake’s 12-wicket match bag helped Isipathana College claim a 7-wicket win over St. Aloysius College at Mahinda grounds in Galle. 

Left-arm spinner and captain of the team, Chameera captured 6 wickets apiece in both innings while Aloysius spinner Gihan Niroshan took a 6-wicket haul for the hosts.

St. Aloysius College (1st inn) – 99 all out in 45.2 overs: Dilruk Hashan 20, Chameera Dissanayake 6/40, Yomesh Ranasinghe 2/16.

Isipathana College (1st inn) – 211 all out in 64 overs: Davis Imesha 61, Yomesh Ranasinghe 41, Sajith Sankalpa 2/43, Gihan Niroshan 6/32.

St. Aloysius College (2nd inn) – 188 all out in 75 overs: Sachith Sankalpa 59, Chameera Dissanayake 6/60.

Isipathana College (2nd inn) – 77/3 in 10.4 overs: Shalinda Ushan 44*.

 

Thurstan College vs St. Benedict’s College

Janidu Karunathilake’s gutsy 40 run helped Bens save the match against the rampaging Thurstan College as the hosts had to be satisfied with only a first-innings win. 

Isuru Fernando’s magnificent century was the highlight of the Thurstan batting performance while the Benedictines were not up to their standards with the bat.

Thurstan College (1st inn) – 255 all out in 63.2 overs: Isuru Fernando 107, Geethika Jayathilake 3/61.

St. Benedict’s College (2nd inn) – 113/7 in 94 overs: Janidu Karunathilake 40*, Thimira Jayasinghe 4/30.  

 

 

 

St. Joseph’s College vs Trinity College

Left-arm spinner Sanogeeth Shanmuganathan’s brilliant spell of 7 for 35 wrecked the Josephian batting lineup as the visiting Trinity College took control of the match at stumps on day 1 at Darley road. 

Josephians fought back hard capturing 8 wickets after they were bundled out for 111.

St. Josephs College (1st inn) – 111 all out in 38 overs: Pathum Madushanka 29, Sanogeeth Sanmuganathan 7/35, Raveen Sayer 3/39.  

Trinity College (1st inn) – 164/8 in 56.1 overs: Dilan Jayalath 53, Hasitha Boyagoda 49, Tashan Perera 2/16, Aravinda Akurugoda 2/18.

 

S. Thomas’ College vs Wesley College

Wesley continued to struggle with the bat as the Thomians took the upper hand in their traditional fixture for the M.Sathasivam Trophy played at Mount Lavinia. 

17 wickets fell on day one yet the Thomians hold the edge after the visitors were 80 for 7 at stumps.

S. Thomas’ College (1st inn) – 240 all out in 55.2 overs: Yohan Mendis 57, Nipuna Gamage 47, Chenutha Wickramasinghe 38, Reshana Senavirathne 4/40, Andrew Parais 3/61.

Wesley College (1st inn) – 80/7 in 39 overs: Zenith Wickramanayake 33*, Tharindu Rathnayake 4/17. 

 

Nalanda College vs St. Anthony’s College

Dilan Bandara shined with both bat and ball for Anthonians as they dominated the proceedings on day 1 against Nalanda College at Katugasthota. 

Off-spinning all-rounder captured 3 wickets and scored an unbeaten 40 for the hosts.
