Derbyshire won the toss and asked Surrey to bat on a lovely day at Woodbridge Road. Jason Roy and Davies gave Surrey a solid start until Roy fell in the 7th over off Mark Footitt for 24. Davies and Sangakkara came together and used all their experience and skill, knocking the ball into gaps and running hard between the wickets.

Davies continued his excellent form in the competition and laid the foundations alongside Sangakkara. The 100 arrived in the 20th over and Davies moved to fifty from his 57th delivery. Sangakkara played some handsome shots as the partnership moved past 100 and Sangakkara’s fifty arrived from his 75th delivery.

Derbyshire made the Surrey pair work hard but the runs started to flow in the middle overs as Davies and Sangakkara matched each other shot for shot. Davies struck the first maximum of the innings into Dapdune Wharf and Sangakkara went over long off for his first six of the afternoon.

Sangakkara raced through the 80’s and into the 90’s and he brought up his first hundred in the competition in the grandest manner with a six over the legside as the partnership moved past 200. And Davies then brought up a deserved century after his 99 and 98 earlier in the competition with a single off Wes Durston.

Sangakkara fell for 111 in the 37th over to leave Surrey 244-2 and he was followed by Rory Burns for 11. And Davies’ excellent effort came to an end in the 44th over when he was caught off Durston for 115.

Tom Curran came to the middle and played some powerful shots straight down the ground until he fell for 29 but Zafar Ansari with 25* steered Surrey to 326-6. Durston and Billy Godleman got the visitors off to a really good start in their run chase of 327. Durston did the majority of the run scoring  as he raced to fifty in just 41 balls and Derbyshire moved past 100 in the 14th over.

Burke came into the attack and immediately dismissed Godleman for 27 to make the breakthrough and end an opening partnership that was worth 115. Burke then bowled Chesney Hughes for 11 and had Wayne Madsen caught for 1 and the visitors suddenly found themselves 155-3.

Durston continued to play brilliantly and he moved to a scintillating century from 74 balls as the hopes of the visitors rested on the captain’s shoulders. Shiv Thakor fell to Gareth Batty for 8 and the Curran’s then combined to dismiss Durston as he looked to launch Tom on 129 and Sam took a steepling catch at midwicket.

With Durston gone the rest of the Derbyshire line up fell away in the face of some excellent bowling from Surrey as Ansari and Sam Curran picked up a couple of deserved wickets each. And it was left to Burke to finish the gameand claim his fifth wicket when he had Footitt caught for 3 and Derbyshire were all out for 249.

Another tremendous team performance from Surrey and they will now turn their attentions to the visit of the Worcestershire Royals to the Kia Oval on Tueday.
