S. Thomas’-St. John’s cricket encounter ends in draw

The First XI cricket encounter between S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia and St. John’s College, Jaffna ended in a draw with the home team taking first innings honours in Jaffna on Saturday.

The match got off to a delayed start (2.45pm) on day one. Put to bat St. John’s made 159 after being 99 for five wickets at stumps on day one. Spinner Ravindu Thilakarathne was the pick of the bowlers, taking five wickets for 37 runs.

In reply, S. Tomas’ could add only 137 runs thanks largely to a laboured 43 runs by Dulanja Silva (in 123 balls).

Raviendran Lohathieswar was the main wicket taker for St. john’s as he picked up five wickets for 44 runs.

In their second essay St. John’s were 28 for two wickets at close.

The annual encounter between the two schools is played for Rev. A. J. C. Selvaratnam Trophy since 2011-12 season.
