Royal juniors win a cliffhanger

Royal College U16 rugby team managed to win their Singer Schools Rugby tournament against S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia by a single try to nothing (5-0) at Royal Complex early last evening.

Royal came into the game on a high, being unbeaten in the two games against Kingswood and St.Anthony’s, winning both games without conceding any points. Thomians on the other hand lost their initial encounter against the Josephians and drubbed the Kingswood juniors 33 nil.

The only try of the game came in late minutes of the first half. The signature move of the Royalists, the rolling maul, was put to good effect by the forwards eventually barging their way over the try line. The kicker didn’t have the distance from the flanks although he was on point with accuracy.

However, S.Thomas’ tried to use the same tactics although their strength was their backline with the possession of three to four elusive runners which they used to good effect against the Kingswoodians in Kandy.
