Royal clinch Under 14 Rugby title

The Junior Under 14 rugby players of Royal College went on to win the under 14 All Island Inter-School Rugby Championships defeating Isipathana College 14-10 in the final that was played at the Havelock Sports Club grounds yesterday.

The Under 14 tournament organized by the Sri Lanka Schools’ Rugby Football Association saw the active participation of 16 schools who were competing to take home the coveted junior title. Coming into the game, Royal scored two converted tries to take their score to 14 points and although the Isipathana team scored two tries, they couldn’t convert the two tries and thus the Royalists took home the title.

Royal made their way to the finals defeating Trinity College 12-0 in the semi-final while Isipathana got their ticket to the finals defeating St. Peter’s College 21-5.

It was a matchup between Wesley College and Dharmaraja College in the Plate final and starting off things in style, it was Dharmaraja College who scored an early try but the Wesley-ites fought back in the final minute to score right under the posts for a converted try to take home the Plate title.

The Bowl final saw Lumbini College taking on Science College and the Mount Lavinia lads, Science College took the bowl honours winning the match 10-0. Nalanda College took the Shield defeating traditional rivals Ananda College 10-5.

Regardless of the outcome, it was an interesting sight to witness the junior players in action participating in true sportsmanship and camaraderie.
