Renown secured their Super Eight place with a convincing 4-2 win against Police SC, after a slight stutter conceding two goals with minutes left at the Police Park.

Renown in this must win match got off to a perfect start scoring inside the 5th minute through Emmanuel Ojinkeya and Fazal Mohamed scored one as they went into halftime with a comfortable cushion. Fazal and Ojinkeya scored their brace midway through the second half but Kumara Lankeshwara and Shanmugaraja Sanjeev scored in the dying minutes for Police to add some respectability.

Renown needed nothing less than three points to secure the fourth place in Group A with Saunders and Solid SC also in the hunt. They opened the scoring in the 4th minute with Emmanuel Ojinkeya scoring for the visitors.

Fazal Mohamed added the second in the 14th minute finishing off a sweeping move much to the delight of the fans who had made their way to the Police Park.

Early on in the second half Police let Renown off the hook when Sathish Kumar misjudged a cross which let the Police player all alone at the far post with an open goal but volleyed it wide much to the disappointment of the bench and fans.

Renown punished Police for that missed opportunity as Fazal finished off a slick counter-attack. Farood Faiz passed to his Zahira team mate Mohamed Humaid who cut back in and crossed it to Fazal for a cheeky lob over the goalkeeper. Then Ojinkeya completed a fine performance converting from close range from a cross.

With minutes left Police captain pulled a goal back curling in a ball towards the far post and Shanmugaraja Sanjeev headed in the second on the stroke of 90 minutes as Renown eased off the pedal. However it was the only goals Police scored as Renown tightened the defense to secure the win.

“Team was performing well after the first couple of matches in the season. They learnt the lesson from last match where their discipline wasn’t there. Finishing has to improve but we have improved. These guys are talented; I just need to polish them. We took it easily at the end,” Renown coach Mohamed Amanullah added after the match.
