Pushpakumara’s 17-year-old record broken by Dinusha Chamudika

The penultimate day of the All Island Athletic Championship 2018 concluded today (4th), with six new meet records established in 17 finals that were conducted on the day.

The 800m finals produced three new meet records,  Manoj Pushpakumara’s 17-year-old record in the Under 18 was erased and two in the Under 16 age categories.

Dinusha Chamudika De Silva of Sooriyawewa National School, who has transferred to St. Peter’s College for his Advanced Levels, erased a 17-year-old long standing record of 1:56.3min by  Manoj Pushpakumara of A Rathnayaka C.C. – Walala in the Under 18 Boy’s 800m.Dinusha clocked a terrific time of 1:54.74min to take the victory with a new record. Sasindu Deshan of Gurukula V.Kelaniya was placed second clocking 1:57.00 while K.G.C.K.Weerasekara of A Rathnayaka C.C. – Walala was placed third clocking 1:57.19.

G P S Kumara of A Rathnayaka C.C. – Walala bettered the Boy’s Under 16 800m which was held by B N D Bulugahapitiya of Berevets College – Ampitiya clocking 2:00.68mins. Lahiru Awishka of Senanayaka M.M.V –  Madampe was placed second while Yohan Jasis of Jinaraja Boys College – Gampola was placed third.

In the Girl’s Under 16 800m finals Binadi Malsha Udaya Kumari of Sooriyawewa National school ran a new record time of 2:16.19mins while Hashini Iresha Basnayake of Galgamuwa M.V  – Maharachchimulla and D. Karunarathnna of A Rathnayaka C.C. – Walala who were placed second and third respectively also managed to better the previous meet record.

Sarisha breaks a 12-year-old record

South Asian Games represent Sarisha Gunasekara of Ladies College carried her good form from the Senior Tarbet as she managed to erase a 12 year old record of 11.8m in the Girl’s under 18 Shot Put with a throw of 13.00m while her schoolmate Rehanna David who was placed second also bettered the previous record with a throw of 12.23m. K M T Sandunika of Walala A Rathnayake College was placed third with her best throw measured at 11.73m. Eight athletes who competed in the event earned School’s Athletic Colours.

Senior Tarbet overall champions St Peter’s College, have showcased great strength and are currently at the top of the standings in the Boy’s Junior and Senior championships.
