Rajkrishna, 39, made his announcement public via a Facebook post.

“It is with a heavy heart that I have stopped football refereeing after a 11-year career and 3 years as FIFA/AFC Referee,” the post said.

It is believed that the internal political situation at the Referees Committee has led to his sudden decision to quit.

“I’m not a politician I’m a football fan. It was a hard decision, but I did not have a choice,” it went onto say.

He refereed numerous Asian Football Confederation (AFC) controlled and international matches during his career. Locally he officiated in the Dialog Champions League & FA Cup for many years with the highlight being refereeing the FA Cup final in 2017.

Rajkrishna is one of the top three referees in Sri Lanka who even bought international communication devices to the game which the administration failed to provide. Known for his strict, no nonsense refereeing, he was loved, admired and respected by the players, coaches and media.

“Thank you to all the fellow referees in Sri Lanka and in AFC who officiated games with me. Good luck to FIFA AFC and FFSL administration. Sri Lanka clubs, coaches and players, I’m happy that I’ve won more hearts than the enemies made in the game and ya…….. with all the yellow and red cards shown. Every time I walked into the field with my fellow referees you and my whistle, I have always enjoyed the 90 minutes and cherished it every day,” the clearly emotional post read.

However, he is not planning on staying away from the sport he loves for long.

“Football will always be a part of my life and hope to become a FIFA/AFC Match Commissioner or Referee Assessor. God bless you all. FIFA The Asian Football Confederation.”
