The five-day Athletic Championship, which will be the fourth and the final stage of the All Island School Games 2018 opened with Hon. Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe attending as the Chief Guest of the opening day.

The All Island Athletic Championship this year sees the participation of over 5800 athletes and will be keenly contested throughout the five days in five different age categories. Junior Asian 400m champion Aruna Darshana and Junior South Asian Sprint champion Amasha De Silva were the torch bearers of the opening ceremony.

Three new meet records on the opening day

The opening day which commenced at 04.30pm witnessed the completion of 10 finals with 3 new meet records being established. All three meet records came in field events of which two were in the Under 12 category. In the Under 16 Girl’s Discuss throw Heshani Maheshika St: Sebastian B.V, Kadana improved her own record by over 4 meters with a throw of 38.98m. Bishopian Ovini Chandrasekara was placed second while third place went to Yelini Pabasara of Gamini M.M.V, Ingiriya.

Shining Stars of the Senior Tarbet 2018

The 88th Ritzbury Sir John Tarbet (Senior) Athletic Championship…..

Shihara Sandamini of Good Shepard Convent Panadura bettered her own record of 4.55m in the Under 12 Girl’s Long Jump leaping 4.89m. L T Kavindya of Madirigiriya National School (4.56m) won Silver bettering the previous record. S.Arunavi of Kilinochchi MMV was placed third with a jump of 4.53m.

Ometh Sonithu of Carey College Colombo cleared a record height of 1.50m in the Under 12 Boy’s High Jump. Ashera Gunathilaka of Wayaba Royal C.Kurunegala and D.K. Disanayaka of Irahandaketuwewa M.V. Polonaruwa  were placed second and third respectively clearing 1.44m which also bettered the previous record.

Northern Province dominance in the Pole vault continued with the top two spots of the Boy’s Under 20 Pole Vault going to two vaulters from the North. A. Puvitharan of Chavakacheri Hindu College won the top spot clearing 4.55m while R.Jathusan of Arunodaya College Jaffna cleared 4.45 to take second place. The existing meet record in the event is held by K N Joyson who is also from Arunodaya College Jaffna.
