Nipuna, Wasana and Rheanna set new meet records

Nipuna Dilrukshan Perera of St. Mary’s College Chilaw set a new meet record in the boys’ under-14 Discus Throw with an impressive throw of 39.89m at the 46th Sir John Tarbet junior athletics championship continued at Anuradhapura yesterday.

Perera, a son from a fishing family in Chilaw beat odds to erase the record set by Balachandran Ananth of Hartley College Jaffna last year.

Nathan Praweenan of Hartley College Jaffna finished second with a throw of 34.81m, while Kithmin Ariyarathne of DS Senanayake College Colombo finished third with a distance of 31.87m.

Wasana Mendis of Agamathi BV Panadura erased a six-year-old record in the girls under-15 javelin throw with a throw of 30.98m.

She erased the record set by Heshandri Dharmadasa of Visakha College Colombo, 30.55m set in 2009.

Nelumi Wedagama of Musaeus College Colombo finished second with 29.43m while Ashini Fernando of Adventist International School Negombo finished third with 28.82m.

Two ladies’ throwers Rheanna David and Sarish Gunasekara took the girls under-14 Shot Putt as both of them bettered previous record set by Jani Silva of Ave Maria Convent Negambo with an 8.93m throw in 2012.

Rheanna set the new meet record with gold medal for her 9.87m throw while Sarish took the silver with a 9.49m throw.

Lubna Moreseth of Lyceum-Wattala finished third with an 8.81m throw.

Shan Amantha of Vijitha Central College Dickwella cleared 1:60m to seal the boys under-14 High Jump while LR Kavinda of Yatirawana MW Wattegama threw 48.82m to seal the under-15 boys’ Javelin Throw.

After three days of the championship, St. Benedict’s College Kotahena and Ladies College Colombo were leading the points table of Boys and girls with 39 and 32 points respectively.

St. Mary’s College Chilaw was in second place of boys with 34 points while Vijitha Central College was in third place with 33 points.

Seventh Day Adventist High School Kandana was in second place in the girls’ with 29 points while Lyceum Wattala who was leading the table at the end of second day was trailing in third place with 28 points.

The championship saw huge participation for its events and boys’ under- 12, 80m had 48 heats while under-15 boys’ 400m consisted of 23 heats.

In other events too it was the same, taking a huge amount of time to complete events.

This resulted in postponing two 4X100m relay finals for today while events went till sundown though the schedule was to end at 4:00 p.m.
