A year that has kept all our star athletes locked away at home without sight of the track, is finally ending on a good note.

The National Athletics Championship 2020 will take place on the 26th, 27th and 28th of December at its usual venue, Sugathadasa Stadium.

Many stars in the likes of Himasha Eshan, Aruna Darshana, the Rathnasena Brothers, Greshan Dananjaya, Amasha De Silva, Lakshika Sugandi and Shelinda Jansen were in the listing posted by the Sri Lanka Athletics Association earlier this week.

While many athletes who performed well at the 2019 South Asian Games are included in the participants list, one name is conspicuously missing; that of Sharmila Jan – Women’s 200m champion at the 2019 Nationals meet.

Jan will not however appeal her entry with the board as she believes her well-deserved invitation to run at the Nationals is nothing to appeal about but should have been given the opportunity from the start.

Despite the prevailing pandemic still claiming lives around the island, General Palitha Fernando and his associates at the AASL are determined to conduct this meet as a vital steppingstone for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics (July – August 2021).

Further, the AASL has assured all athletes, officials and other invitees that strict health guidelines will be adhered to and practiced throughout the duration of the meet.

As the meet this year will not be open for spectators, ThePapare.com will bring live results, reports, photos and all race highlights throughout the Nationals. So, keep it logged!
