More Tennis Action this September with Regional Open

This September will be filled plenty of Tennis action in and around the country with several local circuits getting underway during the weekend focusing on the junior rankings.

The concluded Sri Lanka Nationals gave the younger ones in the tennis circuit the morale boost to go on to greater heights with the Women’s national title itself going to the hands of the 18 year old Thisuri Molligoda. This September, the SLTA courts will come alive for the ATF World Series under 14 where the top seeds in the under 14 division will feature in the international draw to level up in their junior points.

Moving further down the Colombo suburbs towards Mount Lavinia, the Dinesh Kanthan administered Tennis academy is currently being worked off at the S. Thomas’ College courts in Mount Lavinia. A total of 259 players are participating in the tournament that is primarily for the junior tennis players in the ages of 7-14. The main event of the tournament is the under 14 draw for both Boys and Girls and will be worked off towards the penultimate days of the championships which is set to conclude on the 13th of September with the award ceremony. 

Tennis will come alive in the Central hills this weekend with the Kandy Garden Club Open Tennis Championships seeing a start. The traditional open championships is organized by the Garden club annually and features players mainly from the Central region who will make their way through to the Garden club courts situated adjoining the Kandy lake for the tournament. The tournament will have age groups from under 10 to under 18 in the Junior category for the Boys and Girls including doubles and singles and also the open titles.

The open title games for the Kandy Garden Club open will commence over the weekend and is expected to conclude on Sunday evening with the Men’s and Women’s finals. This will be the two most interesting fixtures out of all the events happening in the courts and is expected to draw a considerable fans. The tournament will conclude with the awards ceremony.

Just in the outskirts of Kandy we find the Matale District Open Ranking Junior Tennis Tournament currently in progress in the Matale District Tennis Club courts. The junior tournament which is a ranking tournament has a count of 109 players participating between the ages of 10 and 14 in both Girls’ and Boys’. The tournament is expected to conclude on the 6th if the weather stays bright all throughout the tournament and the weekend will decide who will be the contenders for the 11 trophies on offer.
