Trinity College took major honors in their match against S. Thomas’ College which was played for the Inaugural Ranil Abeynaike trophy which concluded in Mount Lavinia.

Trinity continuing from their overnight score of 35 for the loss of 1 wicket went on to score a convincing 241/6 declared with skipper Dinuk Wickramanayake scoring a brilliant 93 runs. It was a superb batting effort by the Lions as Wickramanayake guided the Trinity ship to a commanding position just at the brink of lunch. Ron Chandragupta also played his part with the bat scoring 73 runs and the duo made sure they got their team passed the Thomian first innings score.

Wickramanayake in particular who has been a pillar of strength for the Trinitians this season stood up once more with a customary batting display.

The host’s then batting in their 2nd innings were in total disarray as they were holding fort at one points with 3 batsmen back in the pavilion for just 3 runs. Skipper Javed Bongso and Thilaksha Sumanasiri then struck out a commendable partnership which put the Thomians out of danger. Both batsmen managed to score half centuries and put on a century stand to end with 116 runs on the board at the close of play. Left arm spin bowler Lakshan Jayasinghe made the break through’s early on as he finished with figures of 2/28.

Both Bongso and Sumanasiri broke lose after the initial stage and went on to get some good batting practice before the close of play. With the match ending in a draw the inaugural Ranil Abeynaike trophy was shared between the two schools.
