Tamil Union Cricket Club defeated Galle Cricket Club by 3 wickets in their Group B encounter in the SLC Major Club Limited Over Tournament worked off today.

Due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions, the match was reduced to a 31-over affair. Rajith Priyan, the Galle CC skipper won the toss and decided to bat first at Surrey Village Grounds.

Jacob Sachin and Yasodha Lanka opened the innings for Galle providing a decent start with the bat putting on 31 runs but both the openers lost their wickets in quick succession putting the team under some pressure at 2 for 46 after 14 overs.

The number three batsman Raveen Yasas and Chanaka Ruwansiri rebuilt the innings to a certain extent adding 57 runs for the third wicket but after their dismissals, Galle lost their way and was restricted to 153 runs in the allotted 31 overs.

Ruwansiri top-scored with a knock of 39 runs off 22 balls with 5 fours and a six while Yasas chipped in with 31 runs off 39 balls for Galle CC. The left-arm spinner Dilum Sudeera was the fulcrum of the Tamil Union’s bowling lineup as he took 4 scalps for 17 runs in his 6-over spell.

Chasing 162 runs to win as per the revised D/L score, Galle CC batters got off to a terrible start losing the first 4 wickets for just 28 runs insides the first 7 overs. But former Peterite batter Santhush Gunathilake coming from nowhere played a blinder of an innings guiding Tamil Union to a 3-wicket win.

Gunathilake gave a good account of himself scoring an unbeaten 79 runs off 71 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes at a strike rate of 111.26.
