The newly-appointed Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) president Rizly Illyas and his executive committee have made a number of appointments to sub-committees for the next two years.

Former Kandy Sports Club legend and veteran coach Nihal ‘Viper’ Gunaratne was appointed as the chairman of SLR’s coaching committee that oversees the coaches in the country.

This initiative will also apply for the national coaching segment, which has not had a permanent fix since the exit of Peter Woods in 2018. A level 3 accredit World Rugby educator, Gunaratne is one of the most experienced coaches in the country with over 40 years of experience behind him.

SLR hopes that all the accredited coaches will come under Gunaratne’s perview and will help the coaches improve on their skills.

Meanwhile, former Sri Lanka sevens cap Rohantha Peiris along with former CH & FC veteran Ravindranath Wijenathan will be taking office in the SLR Appeal board.

Sri Lanka Rugby is yet to decide on the future of the Dialog Inter-Club 7’s, scheduled for the end of the month.

After the second wave of Covid-19 cases emerging from Diwulapitiya in Gampaha, SLR will need decide on the future of the tournaments. Currently, all public gatherings and events have been banned by the Ministry of Health.
