Kandy Sports Club renamed their spectator pavilions in the names of two Kandy stalwarts Sean Wijesinghe and Lasantha Wijesuriya  who dedicated themselves to the sport bringing glory to the club over the past two decades.

The ceremonial opening took place at the Annual General Meeting of the club last week where the two stands were unveiled.

Lasantha Wijesuriya, a proud product of St. Anthony’s College was a brilliant center back who played both for Kandy and later for the country. Lasantha who first started off his club career at CH & FC moved to Kandy Sports Club in 1992. The year 1992 was a significant year for the hill country club as that year marks the beginning of the Kandyan supremacy. Lasantha played alongside other veterans such as Indrajith Bandaranayaka & Imthie Marikkar in that Kandy outfit and later went on to captain the side in the 1997.

Under his tenure as captain, Kandy Sports Club went on to be triple champs winning the sevens, league and the Clifford cup title. Lasantha’s tenure in the Kandy jersey which was from 1992-1999 was a significant era as he played in a major role in the club’s path to become a champion outfit.

The latter, Sean Wijesinghe would not need any introduction being considered to be a legend in the contemporary era. Learning his basics of the sport from Trinity College, Sean started his career at the club in the year 2002. He later went on to captain the side in 2010 where the club ended up  winning both the league and the Clifford cup.

Sean has been a regular in the team since 2002 and had the privilege of wearing the national colours on several occasions in his 13 year stint as a professional rugby player. Sean Wijesinghe is considered to be a revolutionary skipper as he was responsible in bringing glory back to Kandy after a rough two years. Leading the team once again in 2014, Sean made sure the league title and the Clifford comes back to the trophy cabinet of the club house after a lapse of two seasons.

Being a part of 13 league title winning teams and leading the team at two occasions, Sean Wijesinghe hung his boots last season and currently contributes to the club as Assistant Coach.
