Marking a significant milestone in the national initiative to transform Sri Lanka into a global sports tourism hub, a special press briefing was held this afternoon at the Duncan White Auditorium of the Ministry of Sports, Colombo 07, to announce the historic international rugby tournament and sports festival scheduled for this August.

The press conference was attended by the Hon. Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Ministry Secretary, the Director General (DG) of the Department of Sports Development, and Mr. Saabir Cader, Founder and Director of ‘Asia Pacific Lions Rugby’ (APL), along with members of the organizing committee and official sponsorship representatives.

During the briefing, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports officially announced its full approval, patronage, and support for this prestigious week-long international sports festival, which will take place from August 22 to 28. DASA Group UK, a leading London-based international organization, is contributing as the Main Sponsor of this tour to uplift the country’s sports sector and sports tourism.

Key Highlights of the Tournament and Sports Week:

First Sri Lankan Tour in British Premiership History: This marks the historic maiden tour to Sri Lanka by the renowned ‘Northampton Saints’ from the English Premiership Rugby and the Asia Pacific Lions. The squad includes 10 English international rugby players.

World-Class Superstars to Sri Lanka: Australian rugby legend Mr. David Campese serves as the Rugby Director, while several world-class stars, including former Australian captain Will Genia, will join the tournament.

August 23 – T20 Charity Cricket Match: A unique friendly cricket match between international rugby stars and Sri Lankan Cricket Legends.

Local Sports Development and Training: The Sri Lanka XVs rugby squad will receive international training opportunities. Additionally, special ‘Coach the Coach’ knowledge-sharing programs and island-wide community outreach sessions will be conducted for local rugby coaches.

August 28 – The Grand Rugby Clash: The official grand rugby match of the tour will be held in a spectacular manner at the Colombo Racecourse International Stadium.

Through this massive international attraction and investment, the primary goal of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, as well as the Government, is to globally promote Sri Lanka as a safe, attractive, and world-class sports tourism destination.
