The 85th edition of the Sir John Tarbet Senior Athletic meet, the islands oldest Schools’ Athletic competition concluded today after three days of action.
The three-day athletic competition witnessed 13 new meet records being established at the Diyagama Mahinda Rajapakshe Stadium while another meet record was equaled in the Girl 110m hurdles.
Shehan Kariyawasam of St. Joseph’s college, Colombo was adjudged the Best Male Athlete of the Year for his performance of 14.06secs in the 110m hurdles while long jumper Ridma Nishadi of Dharmashoka College Ambalangoda clinched the Girls title with a jump of 5.98m in the Long jump .
Walala, A. Rathnayake College clean sweeps the Girls’ title
Walala A. Rathnayake College once again showed their dominance as they raced to victory in the Girls’ category. They accumulated a total of 253 points and were far ahead of the second placed Sumana Balika Vidyalaya, Ratnapura who only managed 92 points in total. Lyceum international, Wattala was placed 3rd with a total of 76 points.
Maris Stella with a hard fought victory
Traditional athletic power house, Negombo’s Maris Stella College had to work hard for their success in the overall category. The Maristonians finished the competition as overall champions with a total of 138 points but were given a run for their money by the Benedictines who were a mere 5 points behind, accumulating 133 points. Walala A Ratnayake boys were in the challenge until the last gasp but had to be satisfied with a 3rd place finish as they only managed to secure 130 points.
