The 2017 edition of the International Schools Athletic Championship commonly known as ISAC opened in grand fashion at the Diyagama Mahinda Rajapakse Stadium. The blue ribbon event will be worked off for three days with the grand finale held on the 27th Monday.

Despite an anonymous note of a bomb threat which prompted the authorities of 5 schools to withdraw their staff and students from the tournament, ISAC 2017 opened with the participation of 26 international schools in the country. The organizers had taken extra measures to tighten the security around the stadium and ensure the safety of all attending.
Proceedings kicked off with a parade of athletes representing their institutions and the walk into the stadium was led by the Lyceum College band , The International school’s flag was hoisted by the Chairman of International Schools Sri Lanka and Gateway College , Dr.Harsha Alles while Mrs Nikitha Grero , Deputy Principal Lyceum College and Chairperson of ISAC 2017 hoisted the National flag.
The first day saw many of the heats in the running events and finals of long jump, high jump and the throwing events completed. At the end of the first day Gateway College and Lyceum College were already breaking away from the rest of the schools in the overall championship and it will intensify as the championship progresses into its second and third days,
