Sri Lanka capitulate to 55 as India register smashing win

ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

Sri Lanka were bowled out for 55, repeating nightmares of the Asia Cup final as India registered a mammoth 302-run win in their ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 encounter at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

Reporting from Mumbai, India.

With this win, India confirmed their place in the semi-finals with 7 wins out of 7 matches.

The Indian seam bowling trio – Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj and Mohammad Shami put up an amazing bowling display to rattle Sri Lanka in just 19.4 overs after their batters amassed 357 for the loss of 8 wickets. Shami took 5 wickets for 18 runs, whilst Siraj captured 3 for 16.

Sri Lanka’s top 5 batters managed just 2 runs between them. The only two teams to score as few between their top 5 batters in a men’s international innings before today are Turkey and Myanmar.

Sri Lanka’s run chase was shambolic to say the least. Pathum Nissanka was caught plumb in front by a simply unplayable delivery by Jasprit Bumrah. In the very next over, Dimuth Karunaratne was trapped LBW by Mohammad Siraj as both the openers were dismissed for golden ducks.

Sri Lanka’s best batter in the tournament so far, Sadeera Samarawickrama was caught at third slip off Siraj. Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis was castled by Siraj in the next over as they were 4 down for just 3 runs.

Shami came onto the attack in the 10th over and he took a double wicket maiden to further demolish Lankan Lions. Sri Lanka were 14 for 6 at the end of the powerplay, which is the lowest in Men’s Cricket World Cups.

Lower order batters – Angelo Mathews, Maheesh Theekshana and Kasun Rajitha managed to take Sri Lanka past 50 but they were not able to stay at the crease for long as Shami surpassed Zaheer Khan as the highest wicket-taker for India in World Cups.

Earlier in the afternoon, left-arm seamer Dilshan Madushanka picked up his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs and became the current highest wicket-taker in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 with a total of 18 scalps. India’s batting was mainly depended on Shubman Gill’s 92, Virat Kohli’s 88 and Shreyas Iyer’s 82 whilst left-arm seamer Madushanka ended up with figure of 5 for 80 from his 10 overs.

After opting to bowl first, Madushanka got the first ball to swing back into Rohit Sharma who whipped it away for a boundary. The next ball, Madushanka rolled his fingers across to go away from the batter, like an off cutter as Sharma was castled with a peach.

Chameera and Madushanka bowled their first spell superbly causing plenty of trouble to the Lankans. Gill was dropped on 8 by Charith Asalanka off Madushanka at covers whilst Kohli was given a reprieve by Chameera off his own bowling on 10.

The two batters made sure they paid Sri Lanka for their mistakes adding a mammoth 189-run stand in 179 deliveries for the 2nd wicket.

As the centuries were looming for both Gill and Kohli, skipper Kusal Mendis turned to Madushanka again. The left-arm seamer dismissed Gill with a short delivery as the ball deviated off to the keeper as India were 2 down for 193 runs in 30 overs.

Madushanka got the prized scalp of Kohli in his next over with another off-cutter which stopped a little and the ball lobbed to extra cover.

Chameera too bowled with great pace and accuracy. For his hard work, he was rewarded when KL Rahul was caught at covers for 21 with a soft dismissal.

Madushanka came for another spell, his fourth and immediately made an impact when he bounced out Suryakumar Yadav to derail the Indian innings.

Despite wickets falling around, Shreyas Iyer maintained a solid scoring rate, smashing 6 sixes during his 56-ball 82. He became Madushanka’s fifth wicket whilst looking for quick runs in the death overs.

India – 357/8 (50 overs) Shubman Gill 92, Virat Kohli 88, Shreyas Iyer 82, Ravindra Jadeja 35, Dilshan Madushanka 5/80.

Sri Lanka – 55 (19.4 overs) Kasun Rajitha 14, Maheesh Theekshana 12, Mohammad Shami 5/18, Mohammad Siraj 3/16.
