Sri Lanka suffered a 7-wicket loss to India in their 1st Super 6 Round encounter, thereby ending their hopes of making it through to the semis of the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup.

India got the perfect start after opting to bowl first, as Nethmi Senarathna lofted one to the fielder at short extra cover off the first delivery of the game. Her opening partner fell in the next over leaving Sri Lanka on 2/8 and things just did not get better.

Sri Lanka’s only hope lay on captain Vishmi Gunaratne and she obliged with a couple of boundaries, albeit through streaky shots. However, when she was done by a brilliant googly from Parshavi Chopra, all hope of setting a defendable total had to be set aside as the team looked to bat through the 20 overs.

They ended with 59/9, with Umaya Rathnayake the only other batter apart from Gunaratne to get into double figures.

India’s chase started in frantic fashion, as can be expected from their openers Shafali Verma and Shweta Sehrawat. Verma smashed a six and a four before being trapped in front by Vihanga. The Sri Lankan off-spinner gave India a minor scare with the wicket of Richa Ghosh in the same over but a 35-run partnership between Sehrawat and Soumya Tiwari put India back on track.

Vihanga eventually broke through but it was too little, too late as India got home with 7 wickets in hand and 12.4 overs remaining.

With the loss, Sri Lanka now have no chance of moving through to the semis; their last game of the tournament will be against hosts South Africa on the 24th.
