South Africa was the clear favourite to host the 2018 edition of the competition and the matter had to be finalised at the ICC’s Annual meeting in Edinburgh

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has postponed the decision to October, on whether to host the T20 World Cup in 2018. The ICC after the success of the T20 World Cup 2016 in India, had thoughts of restoring it to a once every 2-years event. Currently the tournament is held after a gap of 2 years, but the ICC had plans of restricting it to once every 4 years. South Africa was the clear favourite to host the 2018 edition of the competition as the matter had to be finalised at the ICC’s Annual meeting in Edinburgh which concluded on Saturday. According to Dave Richardson, ICC’s Chief Executive the question was discussed but further the final decision would be taken only after interactions with Star, which holds the braodcasting rights of the ICC tournament.

said, “It came up for discussion. In principle the Board supported the possibility of at least holding an additional World T20 in 2018,” Richardson said after the annual conference. There is a gap in the Future Tours Programme calendar for it to take place. But again it depends whether it is worth it or not – we have got a broadcast agreement in place with Star. They need to be consulted. Their views need to be sought,”as quoted by espncricinfo.com

He further added, “We need to negotiate a value for that tournament. We would have loved to have made a decision this time, but we are not ready yet. We need to work through the details with Star and then make a decision in October.”

The T20 World Cup 2020 meanwhile is scheduled to be hosted in Australia. Earlier there were speculations regarding the fact that both Australia and New Zealand will host the tournament but it was later confirmed by New Zealand Cricket that Australia would only host it.
