Long distance runner, Hiruni Wijayaratne will be Sri Lanka’s only entry at the fast approaching IAAF World Athletics Championship, scheduled to commence on the 27th September in Doha, Qatar.

In a disappointing turn of events, the Sri Lankan community now has just one athlete to carry their hopes and dreams at the World stage, but it couldn’t have been anyone better than Hiruni Wijayaratne.

Hiruni Wijayaratne, who’s currently living in the USA as a professional athlete, has safely established herself as one of the best long-distance runners in the history of Sri Lanka. While Wijayaratne’s prime goal was to bring medals for her country, Sri Lanka denied her of an Olympic entry back in 2016.

However, Hiruni’s intentions stayed put and three years later she qualified for the IAAF World Athletics Championship as the sole participant from Sri Lanka.

Hiruni will be participating in the women’s marathon event at the World Championships. While renewing the National record at the Dusseldorf marathon with a run of 2:34.10 she also set a new South Asian Record in her name.

The star marathoner had her first go at the Sri Lanka Nationals this August when she set a high precedent, winning both the 5000m and 10000m long-distance races.

The Women’s Marathon event final will be on Friday, 28th September at 02:29am SL time. ThePapare.com will be following Wijayaratne’s journey at the World Championships so be sure to keep it logged for updates and news from Doha!
