The fourth fixture in the inaugural Lanka Premier League 2020 between Galle Gladiators and Colombo Kings was shortened to a 5-over contest due to heavy rain at Hambantota. Thanks to Caribbean star Andre Russell’s jaw dropping batsmanship, Colombo Kings won the game by 34 runs securing their 2nd straight triumph of the tournament.

The skipper of Galle Gladiators Shahid Afridi won the toss and invited Colombo Kings to bat which was the obvious decision considering the heavy rain that had preceded the game.

Changing the guard for Colombo Kings, Andre Russell and Thikshila De Silva came out to open the innings against Gladiators to make full use of the 5 overs available to them.
Without wasting any time, Russell made his intentions very clear, taking 26 runs off oppositions’ strike bowler Mohammad Amir. The big West Indian lit up the Sooriyawewa stadium (even after those heavy rains) as it rained sixes, taking down the Gladiators’ bowlers one by one over the boundary rope.
His 19-ball 65 included 4 sixes and 9 boundaries which will go down as the fourth fastest half century in T20 history (14-balls). Laurie Evans and Russell added a 65-run unbeaten partnership for the 2nd wicket guiding Colombo Kings to a World Record score for a 5-over (reduced T20) game (96 runs).
The Gladiators did not get going in their reply as only Danushka Gunathilaka impressed with the bat with a 15-ball 30. Ashan Priyanjan and Qais Ahmed shared one wicket a-piece restricting Galle Gladiators to 62 runs to secure a 34-run victory.
The next match day of the tournament will be another double header as Dambulla Viiking, Jaffna Stallions and Kandy Tuskers, Galle Gladiators will go head-to-head on Monday (30) at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium.
