Dr. Namith Sankalpana; a senior Doctor of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union, Sports and exercise medicine unit and the Sri Lanka National Life Saving Team along with Dr. K A P Kiriella, member of the team of doctors at the Ministry of Sports and current Doctor of the Sri Lanka National Rugby Team,

First Aid for rugbypresented a detailed and highly advantageous seminar for a number of rugby officials and team doctors representing top clubs and schools. Both Dr. Sankalpana and Dr. Kiriella recently attained the ICIR World Rugby Level 2 sports medicine qualification in Tokyo, Japan.

The seminar was done theoretically initially and later on in a practical sense using dummies and even some members of the audience. The two doctors mainly spoke on the importance of knowing how to treat an injured player on the field and the steps needed to prevent further damage to the player.

First Aid for rugbyThe current level of this process was also pointed out by the audience and the doctors addressed this by providing necessary and legal solutions to deal with aggressive players and coaches who opt to go disregard doctors’ orders.

St. Peter’s College Rugby Team Doctor, Dr. Clive brought forward a point that evidently has been occurring throughout rugby matches in Sri Lanka. He expressed that a doctor representing one of the participating teams (school/club) should not be allowed to work during that particular match due to favoritism or sometimes even neglect.

The rugby officials that attended the seminar gave positive feedback on this event and cleared all their doubts and issues with the utmost passion and cooperation.
