Dominant Western Warriors take Carlton Super 7s International first leg

The dominant Western Warriors beat the fighting Southern Sharks 14-12 in final, to take the Carlton Super 7s International first leg concluded at Koggala this evening.  

Quarter final saw Central Kings begin day two on a good note as they scored 38 points past a woeful North Western Blacks team 38-07. Game two of the day  witnessed good competitive rugby as North Central Typhoons took on Southern Sharks,  and Fiji flyer Samuela Saqiwa scored a last gasp try down the left flank to seal a hard earned victory- 17-12 

North Eastern Gladiators came up second best to an Uva Vipers team inspired by Tomasi Cama  19-12 and the  Eastern Eagles in shocking pink gave a good fight but came up short to a strong Western Warriors team in the quarter final also finishing 19-12.

Pium Jayasinghe opened the scoring for North Western Blacks but a brace of tries from Captain Saliya Kumara helped defending champions Jaffna Challengers win their first game of the day. Jaffna Challengers 24-19 North Western Blacks. In the next game North Central Typhoons came from behind to beat Sabaragamuwa Stallions 22-19.

Northern Gladiators toppled Jaffna Challengers with ease scoring 33 to 07 of a hapless Jaffna Challengers team.  Sabaragamuwa Stallions made a super comeback to secure a 14-all draw against Eastern Eagles in game 28 of day two in the Carlton Super 7s.

The first semi final of the day was played out between Central Kings and Southern Sharks. Southern Sharks took an early lead in the game but Central Kings hit back to level the game through a try from Anurudda Wilwara. It was all too little to late as Southern Sharks scored four tries past the Central Kings to seal victory and proceed to the final- Southern Sharks 28-14 Central Kings 

The mighty Western Warriors played out the second semi final of the Carlton Super7s against Uva Vipers and were found too strong for the opponent Vipers scoring three tries in the first half. The Warriors displayed yet another strong performance in the second half as they won the game convincingly scoring 36-00 and secured a place in the final alongside the Southern Sharks to battle it out for the Carlton Super 7s trophy 2014. 

The Northern Gladiators proved  too versatile for the North Western Blacks as the Gladiators scored 34 points passed them- 34-05. Meanwhile the Eastern Eagles lost to the North Central Typhoons in a close contest. North Central Typhoons 20-12 Eastern Eagles.

Eastern Eagles met North Western Blacks in the play off for the 9th & 10th place match. Eastern Eagles began well scoring first in the opening minutes of the game and went on to finish the first half with a try to get back the lead. Easter Eagles began the second half as they scored four tries to wrap up the game. Eastern Eagles 24-12 North Western Blacks.

Jaffna Challengers took on Sabaragamuwa Stallions in the play off for the 8th & 7th place. Sabaragamuwa Stallions was the better side from the start as they scored two tries in the first half. Jaffna Challengers scored three quick tries in the second half to make a remarkable comeback from being 14 points down to win 27-12. 

Northern Gladiators met the North Central Typhoons in the 6th & 5th place match. North Central Typhoons began strongly as they scored two tries in the first half. The Northern Gladiators scored points in quick successes in the second half to win 26-17.

In the 3rd 4th playoff game, the Uva Vipers took on the Central Kings. Tim Mikkelson scored two tries in as many minutes for Uva Vipers to take the early initiative. Central Kings scored a try right on half time to reduce the deficit. Central Kings started the second half brightly and a last gasp try from Anurudda Willwara sealed a great comeback victory. The final of the Carlton super sevens first leg was played between the mighty Western Warriors and Southern Sharks. The mighty Warriors got off to a flying start with the Fijian born Sri Lankan Joseph Dunn Naeqe planting the first. Southern Sharks played sensibly by swinging the ball from side to side. Dinusha Chaturanga made a telling break and scored in the corner as the Southern Sharks cut the deficit to two points- 07-05. Sharks captain Srinath Sooriyabandara stepped handsomely and scored to between the upright to gain the lead in the match for the first time. Southern Sharks 12-07 Western Warriors.

The second half began just as the first half did as the Western Warriors pressurised the Southern Sharks defence. The Sharks held firm and attempted to turn tables on the Western Warriors which resulted in Joseph Dunn Naeqe making a dazzling breakthrough the heart of the Southern Sharks defence and gaining a 2 point lead and taking the game.
