Carlton Super Sevens International tournament 2014 Colombo leg commenced on Friday morning with the resumption of the Dialog Carlton Schools 7s group stage matches and by the end of the day,  Science, Isipathana, St Joseph’s and Kingswood Colleges  qualified for the cup semi-finals after winning their respective quarter-final games. 

Science vs Royal (Group Stage)

Winger Sajith Roshan planted 4 tries in the opening game as Science College, Mount Lavinia annihilated Royal College by 40-17 points.

Sajith Roshan kept 2 tries each on either half to completely dominate the proceedings after leading 14-5 after the first half. Apart of Sajith’s 4 tries, Supun Dilshan and Rukshan Dilak scored a try each for the winners while skipper Bhanuka Gamage, Keshan Peiris and Sachin Gamage scored one try each for the Royalists.

Isipathana vs CWW (Group Stage)

Isipathana College touched down on 4 occasions to beat the upcoming C.W.W Kannagara College by 24-00 points to win their final group stage encounter.

Center three-quarter Kushan Indunil’s hat-trick of tries helped the Green Machines to seal a quarter-final fixture against Trinity College. Supun Senevirathne scored another try for boys from Havelock Town as they led 19-00 at the end of the first half.

Trinity vs Kingswood (Group Stage)

Kingswood College came down strongly in the 2nd half to draw their final group stage match against Trinity College as the final scores read 17-17.

Hirantha Manamendra scored the opening try for Kingswood but Trinitians got in to the lead with two tries courtesy of Sanushka Abeywickrama and Saranga Gunathilake as Trinity led 12-05 at half time. Rayan Weerakoon started the 2nd half with another Trinity try but two late tries by Reeza Rafaideen and Tharindu Chandrasena made sure Kings draw the match and remained unbeaten.

St. Joseph’ vs Wesley (Group Stage)

Vimukthi Rahula and Romesh Priyankara (Cheetah) of St. Joseph’s College ran down three tries each as the Josephians demolished Wesley College by 41-05 points.

Vimukthi Rahula and Romesh Priyankara were superb as they were unstoppable most of the times with their quick side steps while skipper Shehan Bopearachchi opened the scoring with his only try of the match. Awantha Heshan of Wesley scored the only points for the losing team.

Science vs Wesley – 1st Quarter-Final

Science continued their dominant and unbeaten run as they handed another defeat to the double blues Wesley College by 31-00 points.

5 tries were scored by Udayanga Perera (2), Shifan Irshad, Thanuja Maduranga and skipper Lasindu Ishan. Scientists from Mount Lavinia played a rich brand of 7s rugby as Wesley College failed to score any points. Science led 17-00 at lemons.

Isipathana vs Trinity – 2nd Quarter-final

Green Machines of Isipathana College qualified for the semi-finals beating one of the strongest teams in the tournament, Trinity College by 31-10 points.

Winger Supun Senevirathne (2), Omalka Gunarathne, Gayan Wickramarachchi, Kushan Indunil and Chamod Fernando scored fascinating tries for the winners while Saranga Gunathilake and skipper Isuru Rangala planted down tries for the boys from Kandy.

St. Joseph’s vs Royal – 3rd Quarter-Final

Blue & White College boys from Colombo 10 produced an impressive 7s display against Royal College to win their quarter-final encounter by 19-05 points.

Scrum-half Suneth Chathuranga, forward Taariq Salih and winger Romesh Priyankara  crossed the try line for the Josephians while fly-half Dulith Fernando converted two tries. Young center Ovin Ashkey scored the only try for Royal.

Kingswood – CWW Kannangara – 4th Quarter Final

Both teams got the rare chance of playing under lights as the final schools game of the day ended with Kingswood College beating the fighting C.W.W Kannangara Vidyalaya 26-7 points.

Winger Chathura Senevirathne scored 2 tries for the winners while forward Narada Willangiriya and Srinath Wimalaweera scored a try apiece for Kingswood College. Nippy scrum-half and skipper Madawa Sathsara scored a try under the post for the Kannangara boys. Winners led 14-00 at half time.
