Dambulla Viiking registered the ‘double’ against Kandy Tuskers in the Lanka Premier League 2020 as they managed to beat their opposition by 5 wickets on Thursday (3) at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium.

The game was headlined by the heavy contribution from spinners throughout 39.2 overs but it was Viiking’s new No.03 batsman Angelo Perera who played a vital role to guide his team to the win, grabbing the award for ‘Player of the Match’.

The skipper of Kandy Tuskers Kusal Perera won the toss and elected to bat first with no changes to their playing XI from the last game against the Jaffna Stallions.

After a cautious start, the Tuskers were well on track to a big score when their best batting pair; Kusal Perera and Kusal Mendis were in the crease as the scorecard indicated 90/1 at the end of 11 overs. But Perera’s dismissal put the brakes on the Tuskers’ innings as he fell for that fatal shot to the leg side once again, presenting an easy catch to Sachindu Colombage at deep mid-wicket. This is the 4th time Kusal Perera has been dismissed in the same fashion in this tournament.

Mendis was the only batsman from the Tuskers to go past fifty but he was also dismissed for 55 when he really needed to get going and the Tuskers were restricted to 156 at the completion of 20 overs; the lowest first innings score of the tournament (in 20 overs).

It was another strangle by spin from the Dambulla Viiking as their main spin trio Malinda Pushpakumara, Ramesh Mendis and Samit Patel pulled the game back to pick up 5 wickets for 67 runs in 11 overs.

The chase wasn’t as easy as it is shown in the final result as the Kandy Tuskers spin regiment dried up the runs and squeezed in a few wickets to make life difficult for the Viiking batting unit. However, a measured partnership between Angelo Perera and skipper Dasun Shanaka stole the game away from Tuskers as they added 79 runs in 8 overs.

Perera absorbed the pressure early in the innings and produced a few cheeky strokes to get the run-rate going on his way to a fine half century while Shanaka did what he does best from the get go.

Avishka stars for Jaffna as they remain untouched

After that pair’s dismissals, Viiking struggled a bit to get over the winning line but Samiullah Shinwari and Anwar Ali managed to manufacture a few lusty blows to seal the deal for their team. With this win, Dambulla Viiking has managed to climb to 2nd position in the points table after the completion of half of the scheduled fixtures of the league phase.
