Yupun Abeykoon wins Heat with ease to qualify for semis

Sri Lanka speedster Yupun Abeykoon participated in the Men’s 100m Heats at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham earlier today (2).

Abeykoon competed in the Heat number 6 and won the race comfortably with a timing of 10.06s (+1.1m/s). The top two athletes of each heat (10 heats) progressed to the semifinals stage while the next 7 semifinal spots were awarded to the fastest losers.

Godson Oke Oghenebrume of Nigeria and Kion Benjamin of Trinidad and Tobago were the real threats for Abeykoon in this heat but he managed to storm past them to secure the top spot.

Abeykoon’s 10.06s also ended up being the fastest time in the 100m heats, with Ferdinand Omanyala and Emmanuel Eseme finishing with 10.07s and 10.08s respectively. The semifinals of the event will be held tomorrow at 11.40pm Sri Lanka time.
