Colts and CCC register outright wins and survive demotion scare

Under 23 division 1 cricket tournament group stage ended on Sunday as all the 6 matches producing outright wins.

Arch-rivals NCC and SSC emerged as the table toppers after 7 weeks of exciting cricket. Army SC and Bloomfield C & AC will be demoted to the division 2 next season after poor performances throughout the season. Colts CC and Colombo CC endured demotion worries after they recorded brilliant outright victories over the last weekend.

Colts vs NCC

Sri Lanka T20 player Akila Dananjaya produced a stunning all-round performance to help his club, Colts CC beat the fancied Nondescript cricket club by 93 runs at Colts grounds. 

Akila scored 2 half-centuries and captured a match-bag of 7 wickets to trouble NCC while upcoming off-spinner Tharindu Kaushal scalped a 10 wicket match-bag for NCC and their left handed batsman Sandun Weerakkody smashed a century in a losing cause.

CCC vs Army

Colombo Cricket Club secured their first win of the tournament when they beat SL Army SC by 23 runs in a closely contested match at CCC grounds.

Lakshitha Madushan’s valiant century did not help the Soldiers to get over the line during this crucial relegation match. Sachithra Perera’s leg spinners did the job for CCC in the 2nd innings as he picked up 5 Army wickets.

Ragama vs Air Force 

Ragama CC ended their season on a high note as they crushed the Air Force SC outfit by 211-run margin at Katunayake BOI grounds. 

Left-arm spinner Amila Aponso mesmerized the Airmen with a 12-wicket match bag while their middle order batsman Eranga Rathnayake scored a brilliant century.

Moors vs SL Ports

Shehan Jayasooriya captured a 10-wicket match bag and Oshada Fernando scored twin half-centuries as Moors inflicted a massive 251-run loss to SL Ports Authority CC at Braybrooke place.

SSC vs Tamil Union

Sinhalease Sports Club continued their dominant run in the current under 23 tournament as they recorded a massive 174-run win over the defending champions, Tamil Union C & AC at P. Sara Oval grounds.

Nuwan Thushara wrecked through the Tamil Union batting lineup twice as he managed to get 7 wickets in the match while Vishwa Wijerathne, Sanka Ramesh and Ramesh Mendis excelled for SSC with half-centuries.

Bloomfield ended their miserable season with another defeat as Navy SC sprung another 5 wicket win over the boys from Bloomfield at Welisara.
