Here’s a brief look into a few matches which took place today in the Singer U19 Division I cricket tournament 2016/17.

St Sylvesters College, Kandy VS St Aloysius College, Galle

Hareen Buddila’s six-for helped Aloysius to take honors on the first day of their group C match against St Sylvester’s College at Galle International Stadium. Aloysians won the toss and they put Sylvester’s to bat first. Hareen stormed through St Sylvester’s batting line up with 6 wickets while Niduka Malshith bagged 3 wickets from the other end. The boys from Kandy could only score 80 runs in 45.3 overs. Sashika Reman top scored with 36 for Sylvester’s.

In reply, St Aloysius were 135 for 3 in 47 overs with Ravindu Sanajana’s 54 and Ashen Bandara’s unbeaten 26.

St Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa VS Nalanda College, Colombo

Mishen Silva’s blistering 121 guided St Sebastian’s to a formidable total of 327 for their first innings in their match against Nalanda College at Moratuwa. The visitors won the toss and elected to ball first. Mishen got together with Nuwanidu Fernando to add 111 for the 4th wicket. Nuwanidu scored a patient 67 as Mishen went berserk on the other end with 6 maximums and 13 boundaries. Umeksha Dilshan bagged 4 wickets for 62 for Nalanda College.

In reply, Nalanda were 33 for no loss in 10.1 at stumps on day 1.

Maris Stella College, Negombo vs St Servatius College, Matara

This group D encounter between St Servatius College and Maris Stella College is hanging in the balance at stumps on day 1. Maris Stella won the toss opted to bowl first. Muditha Heshan and Sandaru Nethmina scored half centuries for the boys from Matara as they posted 214 runs in 62.1 overs. Hachindu Kolombage took 4 for 30 and Ravindu Fernando took 3 for 42 for Maris Stella College.

In reply, the boys from Negombo were 91 for 2 in 26 overs with Lasith Croospulle unbeaten on 54.

Lumbini College vs Royal College

Lumbini ended day 1 on a strong note in their group B match against Royal College and Colts grounds. Royal won the toss and put Lumbini to bat first. In-form batsman Thanuka Dabare scored 81 runs for Lumbini while Kaveen Peiris and Raveesha Sathsara chipped in with couple of forty’s. For the Royalists, Ganith Sandeepa and Gothama Ranasinghe took 3 wickets each.

The Royalist came on to bat in the final session and they were pushed to the corner early on by Sashen Ravindu who bagged 2 wickets for 18 runs. At stumps, Royal College were 67 for 3 in 23 overs.

St Jospeh’s College vs St Joseph Vaz College

St Joseph’s registered a convincing first innings victory against  St Joseph Vaz today in their group D encounter. Joseph Vaz resumed 2nd days play at 24 for 2. They got into more trouble after losing 4 wickets for just 66 runs. Then Madushan Ranathunge and Dhananjaya Perera got together and put up 58 for the fifth wickets Madushan top scored with 48 while Dhananjaya scored 35 runs.

Madushan was the last wicket fall and they were cleaned up for 159 in 66.5 overs. Centurion Nipun Sumanasinghe was the star with the ball as well for the boys from Darley road as he took a fifer-for and national U19 cap Jehan Daniel took 3 for 55.

Joseph Vaz was asked to follow on but this time around they absolutely dominated the Josephian bowling attack. Early on they lost 2 wickets for 51 but Thilan Pradeeptha and Madushan Ranathunga took the attack to the bowlers. The pair put up 63 runs in just 60 balls with Thilan scoring 30 runs.

Madushan was then joined by Dhanajaya Perera and they totally dominated the bowling as they posted 104 runs in just 13 overs. Madushan top scored with 95 runs in just 88 balls and Dhananjaya scored a 31 ball 40 as Joseph Vaz posted 216 for 4 for their second innings. Despite the strong batting performance by St Joseph Vaz in the second innings, the Josephians bagged first innings points from the match.

Early on, Nipun Sumanasinghe’s 122 helped Joes to post 303 for 8 after they elected to bat first.
