SIXTY-FOUR Bahrain Rugby Football Club (BRFC) members are flying out today to Colombo to ‘donate kit and equipment ranging from boots, shirts to tackle bags’.

“We are delighted that our intrepid band of BRFC tourists as well as our members helped raise a fantastic amount of over BD6,000. This went towards buying much needed rugby kit and equipment for disadvantaged children in the Colombo area,” said chairman of BRFC Mike Cunningham,

The club held a number of events over the last few months, such as the famous ‘Alternative Car Park’ and the more recent ‘Sponsored Walk from Muharraq to Saar’ to raise funds.

Sri Lanka have over 125,000 registered rugby players. SDS Jayasinghe College, which the BRFC Vet team – the Golden Oldies – helped last year, went on to win the Sri Lankan ‘B’ division title in the Under 12s and 14s.

“Helped by a great deal by Gulf Air, a total of 64 tourists are flying out of Bahrain today and coming back on May 1,” said Jonty Crosse, one of the organisers of the tour.

The tourists will also be playing a few matches in Sri Lanka.

“We are playing the Sri Lankan Police on Saturday and the Puffins on Sunday – both of which will be very competitive games. More importantly though, with the help of our Sri Lankan Vets, Tuan Burah and Chanaka Prasad, who turn out for the BRFC Golden Oldies, we will conduct a training session at Carey College on Saturday, and this will be followed by a complete training camp on Sunday with a mini tournament for U12 and U14 kids,” said Cunningham.

“We wanted to make this a full proper Bahrain Rugby Club Tour not only to celebrate our award winning season but as a way to promote Bahrain itself.

“I know that this will be the start of a push for an annual Tour but I am so proud how our members and others helped us continue our Sri Lankan initiative,” he added.
