The Sri Lankan Tennis Association courts witnessed some exciting game play as Avindra Perera and Aadavan Pushparaj qualified for the anticipated final clash defeating Chehan Fernando & Anish Wijesinghe.
The first semi final was between Peterite Chehan Fernando and Avindra Perera. A confident Chehan Fernando comfortably took the honors for the first set wining it 2-6. Perera who earlier beat the top seed Suren to earn his semi final spot did not let momentum fade away as he fought back in the second set to win it 7-5. When it all came down to the decisive final set, it was Avindra who played it safe winning the game 6-4.
Fernando had himself an easy entrance to the finals but Perera’s win in the second set let down Fernando’s hopes as Perera sped through to the 6 point mark to win the game. The other semi-final which was the game between the #2 seed Anish Wijesinghe and Aadavan Pushparah was nothing short of excitement and lasted for over an hour.
Anish Weerasinghe had the upper hand in the first set winning it 3-6. The experienced Pushparaj however fought back in the second set to an extent where play had to go for break points to find a winner after the scores ended 7-6. As Pushparaj won four break points, the second set went under his name.
The final decisive set once again went down to the wire where the scores were tallied at 7-6 forcing the referee to go for break points. As Pushparaj once again raced to four break points, seeded player Weerasinghe had to give way to Pushparaj for the finals. Final scores read 3-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4).
Meanwhile Medhira Samarasinghe defeated Nathasha Munaweera in the Girls Under 16 Singles to progress onto the semi finals and will face Tarah Greig. In the other semi final is Janali Manamperi and Anika Seneviratne.
Play will resume tomorrow for the two celebrated Under 18 Singles.
