Anura Tennekoon to be honoured by SSC

One of Sri Lanka’s finest batsmen in the pre-test era, Deshabandu Anura Tennekoon will be honoured by the renowned cricket club, Sinhalese Sports Club tomorrow (1st) in a special felicitation ceremony.

SSC will honour the former Sri Lanka skipper by naming one of their gates in his honour.

Tennekoon made his ODI debut in 1975 against the West Indies, leading Sri Lanka in the first Cricket World Cup of 1975 and he went on to lead Sri Lanka in the 1979 World Cup as well, although his participation was impeded by an injury during the tournament.

In 2000, the former skipper became the chief executive of Sri Lanka Cricket and later held the position as a national selector too.

Previously, Sinhalese Cricket Club has also named their gates after their former greats like Arjuna Ranatunga, P.I. Pieris and Berty Wijesinghhe.
